Narrative
Cross Labs operated not as a traditional research institution, but as a carefully cultivated ecosystem designed to accelerate breakthroughs at the intersection of Artificial Intelligence, Artificial Life, and intelligence more broadly defined. Its methodology centered on radical interdisciplinarity, intentionally drawing researchers from fields as diverse as computer science, evolutionary biology, cognitive science, and even art and design. This was coupled with a strong emphasis on open research – ideas were freely shared, code was collaboratively developed, and pre-prints were favored over traditional academic publishing. The culture actively discouraged siloed thinking, fostering a constant cross-pollination of ideas and approaches. This was further reinforced by a flat organizational structure that minimized hierarchy and empowered researchers to pursue unconventional avenues of inquiry.
Several factors contributed to Cross Labs' unique environment. Its proximity to leading universities provided a constant influx of talent and access to cutting-edge resources. Perhaps more crucially, it was born from a perceived gap in traditional academic and industrial research – a need for a space where high-risk, high-reward investigations into the fundamental nature of intelligence could be pursued without the pressures of short-term profitability or narrow disciplinary boundaries. This combination of intellectual freedom, collaborative spirit, and strategic location created a fertile ground for the emergent "scenius" – a collective intelligence exceeding the sum of its parts, enabling researchers to challenge assumptions and push the boundaries of what was thought possible in the fields of AI and ALife.
