Narrative
Building 20 at MIT wasn't designed for genius, but its very imperfections cultivated it. Born out of a post-WWII space crunch, the hastily constructed, temporary structure offered physical space devoid of pretense and rigid departmental boundaries. This fostered an exceptionally informal culture. Researchers from vastly different fields – radar engineers, linguists, musicians, and the nascent AI community – found themselves neighbors, their work bleeding across the thin walls and through shared labs. This forced serendipitous encounters, sparking unexpected collaborations and a free exchange of ideas.
The building's impermanence also engendered a "fail fast, fail often" mentality. Resources were scarce, encouraging ingenuity and resourcefulness. There was less pressure to conform to established norms and more freedom to experiment with unconventional approaches. Located on MIT's campus, Building 20 benefited from a constant influx of bright students and faculty, creating a fertile ground for intellectual ferment. It was the antithesis of a carefully planned research environment, and that's precisely what made it a hotbed of innovation.
